Virginia car sales leader Ourisman Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram wishes all of Alexandria safe travels during the long Thanksgiving weekend. Beginning Wednesday, more of you than ever will be driving long distances (rather than flying) to holiday destinations. We hope the following tips will make the journey as smooth as possible.
As everyone knows, the Thanksgiving holiday is the most heavily traveled holiday of the year. The busiest days for highway travel are the day prior to, and the day right after Thanksgiving Day. But, fortunately, heavy traffic doesn’t have to create stress. Holidays are meant to be relaxing and fun! It only takes a little planning ahead to make sure a lengthy road trip won’t kill your holiday spirits.
Some of the pre-planning has already been done for those of us travelling through Virginia. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) newsroom has gathered historical traffic data and posted information about when and where travelers may expect the most traffic congestion throughout the holiday weekend. Take advantage of their work and avoid those locations at those times.
Additionally, in order to keep holiday traffic flowing, the VDOT is suspending all lane closures beginning at noon on Wednesday, Nov. 23 all the way through until noon on Monday, Nov. 28. That should give everyone plenty of time to get to the big family dinner, have a nap, watch some games and return home before traffic backs up again around work zones.
It is up to travelers, though, to be prepared for any emergency situations that could occur during the trip. Make sure your vehicle has a fully-stocked first aid kit and a roadside emergency kit with all of the appropriate tools; including flares and/or reflective hazard signs that can be seen at night.
Those who are unable to manage major (or minor) repairs on their own should travel with a well-charged mobile phone and current phone numbers for roadside assistance providers. But, as Virginian’s know, there are some rural and mountainous areas in which cell phones just can’t connect. Make sure someone at your destination knows your complete travel itinerary. That way, if anything goes wrong, and you end up stuck in a remote area with no cell phone communication, someone will know when and where to look for your car.
Don’t wait until the last minute to pack. Buy snacks and energy bars to keep your stomach from growling along the way. And remember to make regular stops. Bathroom breaks and breaks for stretching your legs will help keep you awake and alert.
