Ourisman Chevrolet reports that the Chevrolet Volt, available at its Alexandria Chevrolet dealership, has been named a five-star safety rated vehicle by the National Highway Traffic Safety Adminstration’s New Car Assessment Program. This designation is not the first for the Chevrolet Volt: the electric vehicle was previously recognized as a 2011 IIHS Top Safety pick.
To qualify for a five-star safety rating, vehicles must perform exceptionally well on a series of demanding tests. This year’s evaluations are more strict and comprehensive than ever, including a test recreating a 20-mph side-impact crash into a 10-inch-diameter pole or tree at a 75-degree angle just behind the A-pillar on the driver’s side.
Equipped with a number of standard safety features to protect VA Chevrolet drivers and their passengers, the Chevrolet Volt features comprehensive front, side, knee, and roof-mounted curtain airbags, GM’s StabiliTrak electronic stability control system and a five-year subscription to OnStar’s Directions and Connections Plan, which includes Automatic Crash response services. Volt owners seeking additional safety protection can also add an optional rearview camera system featuring a display within the vehicle’s navigation system.
